本教材針對(duì)新時(shí)期大學(xué)英語教學(xué)的發(fā)展方向，積極服務(wù)地方高校轉(zhuǎn)型發(fā)展和應(yīng)用型、技能型人才培養(yǎng)需要，將語言學(xué)習(xí)與人文素養(yǎng)的培養(yǎng)緊密結(jié)合。內(nèi)容涉及哲學(xué)、語言、歷史、文化、藝術(shù)等人文學(xué)科經(jīng)典主題，選材集趣味性、廣泛性、典型性和時(shí)代性為一體，圍繞單元主題，激發(fā)學(xué)生的學(xué)習(xí)興趣，開闊學(xué)生視野。全書共有14章，供一個(gè)學(xué)期使用。每章由5部分組成，包括引言、詞匯拓展、精讀篇章、泛讀篇章和中外文化常識(shí)。每章后附有各個(gè)部分練習(xí)的參考答案，書后附有課文中重要單詞短語匯總，所以本教材既適用于大學(xué)英語的課堂教學(xué)，也是一套很好的英語自學(xué)課本。
本教材在廣泛調(diào)研的基礎(chǔ)上，依據(jù)語言學(xué)習(xí)與人文專業(yè)知識(shí)相結(jié)合的原則，在選材上注重內(nèi)容的趣味性、信息性、可思性和前瞻性，同時(shí)也注重語言的規(guī)范性、實(shí)用性和文體的多樣性，充分重視對(duì)學(xué)生綜合文化素養(yǎng)的培養(yǎng)。全書共計(jì)14個(gè)單元，每個(gè)單元圍繞一個(gè)主題，由詞匯拓展、3篇精讀文章及練習(xí)題、2篇泛讀文章及文化知識(shí)拓展組成，另附有每個(gè)單元練習(xí)的參考答案。本書所選文章均為原版材料，題材廣泛，體裁多樣，內(nèi)容豐富，難度適中，充分體現(xiàn)培養(yǎng)學(xué)生的思辨能力和應(yīng)用能力。
王焱，教授，博士，現(xiàn)任沈陽大學(xué)外國語學(xué)院院長。擔(dān)任遼寧省翻譯學(xué)會(huì)副會(huì)長，遼寧省高校外語教學(xué)研究會(huì)副會(huì)長等。2013年獲得了遼寧省教學(xué)成果二等獎(jiǎng)。近年來主編外語教學(xué)與研究出版社《跨文化大學(xué)英語閱讀與翻譯教程》等教材及教輔用書等20余部，其中兩部主編教材榮獲遼寧省本科“十二五”規(guī)劃教材。被評(píng)為“全國寶鋼教師”，“遼寧省教學(xué)名師”等稱號(hào)。
